ALICE A Large Ion Collider Experiment. For the ALICE experiment, the LHC will collide lead ions to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang under laboratory conditions. The data obtained will allow physicists to study a state of matter known as quark‑gluon plasma, which is believed to have existed soon after the Big Bang.

ALICE was first proposed as a central detector in 1993 and later complemented by an additional forward muon spectrometer designed in 1995. In 1997, ALICE received the green light from the LHC Committee to proceed towards final design and construction. The first ten years were spent on design and an extensive R&D effort. ALICE recorded the very first proton collisions provided by the LHC in November 2009. During the LHC Run 1 (2009-2013), ALICE participated in all data-taking campaigns, recording proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV, proton-lead collisions at 5 TeV and lead-lead collisions at 2.76 TeV. I ALICE-experimentet samarbetar mer än 1800 fysiker, ingenjörer och tekniker från 41 olika länder. Idén om att bygga ALICE kom upp på ett möte angående LHC (Large Hadron Collider) i mars 1992.

ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion programme and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors.

A higher luminosity means a higher number of collisions in the detector every instant. Yet, during heavy-ion collisions, which is the speciality of the ALICE experiment, a wider variety of particles are generated than in ALICE is the heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. ALICE mission The ALICE Collaboration has built a detector optimized to study the collisions of nuclei at the ultra-relativistic energies provided by the LHC. The aim is to study the physics of strongly interacting matter at the highest energy densities reached so far in the laboratory.

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a detector on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It is specialized to detect quark-gluon plasma, a state of matter thought to have formed just after the big bang.
